I'm trying Emacs

Emacs diary entry #1

I've told myself that this is the year I give Emacs a try. My goal is to either be using it as my full time editor by the end of 2026 or have a very good reason for why I'm not.

It took me close to an hour to get Doom emacs correctly installed correctly on my mac so we're off to a bad start. I've never been a tool-tinkerer type. VSCode has been "good enough" for years, but I definitely recognize there is value in fine-tuning an editor to your needs.

Motivations (as of today):

  • Speeding up my workflow - removing my mouse from the equation
  • Hoping to build an appetite for tool-tinkering
  • Curiosity (what am I missing out on?)
  • In a world where AI is writing most code I think learning to build custom tooling around those agents will be important

Emacs diary entry #2

I've decided to stop using doom for now and try a plain emacs install. Actually, I'm using the minimal emacs config from "Clojure for the Brave and True". I've never gone through the Emacs chapter of the book and it seemed like it taught better fundamentals than watching videos on using dired. Although, maybe not as practical to get me productive.

It feels like it'll be years before I can work effectively with this. Having to open a book to remember how to copy & paste a line of text is not fun.

This post was created, edited, and deployed in Emacs.
